Runway 14L - you can still see the wording on the asphalt - belonging to the abandoned Yugoslav Army airbase Zeljava on the border between Croatia and Bosnia. Zeljava airbase was massive with no less than 5 runways; what makes the base unique, however, was not what’s seen on the outside, rather what’s built into the side of the mountain Plješivica, seen on the right side od this photo. Tunnel complex was capable of housing and autonomously operating three Yugoslav Airforce fighter/recon squadrons, some 60 aircraft in total.

Storage facilities, aircraft hangars, fuel tanks, workshops, housing areas for airforce personnel - it’s all built under the mountain, a massive complex, probably the largest of its kind in Europe, and one of the largest in the world

Detail from a abandoned Soviet observatory in Tien Shan mountains (~3000 meters, with peaks in the background going well above 4000)
